Five Ways To Set 2022 Intentions

The time between Christmas and New Years is a sleepy time around our house. The presents have been unwrapped and enjoyed, our Christmas wreaths are slowly turning brown on the front doors, and question “What day is it?” asked constantly around the house. While we can use this time to find rest from the hustle and bustle of the holidays, I like to use this time to set intentions for the upcoming year. This year I mixed it up by using a variety of templates and involving my husband in dreaming up goals for our whole family. Here are five different ways we set our 2022 intentions:

Set Intentions with Mini Goals

Using fill-in-the-blanks, I complete a mini goal for the year in a variety of topics. This format is great for those who don’t know where exactly to start with their new year resolutions.

  • A bad habit to break
  • A skill to develop
  • A person to be more like
  • A good deed to do
  • A place to visit
  • A book to read
  • A letter to write
  • A new food to try
  • I’m going to do better at

Using More/Less

Another way to create resolutions, this version practices reflecting on the previous year with putting our best foot forward in the new year. In the “less” column, you review this year to determine what traits/decisions/things you want “less” of in the upcoming year. In the “more” column, determine what things you want to add to your life in 2022.

Create Month to Month Intentions

This is by far my favorite template to set intentions. When planning out New Year’s resolutions, how often do you find that by middle of January, you conveniently have forgotten the resolution you were so sure to follow this year? Or maybe you skipped a day and said you’ll try again tomorrow, next week, next year? By setting intentions monthly, this format allows you to try forming a habit for 30 days at a time. In addition, you can try 12 different goals in one calendar year.

Set Intentions by Category

With this format, my husband and I worked together to build goals for the upcoming year. By planning together, we set intentions by category ensuring your family is on the same page and allows for deeper discussions. Below, I’ve listed the different categories we used in my family:

  • Health
  • Career
  • Home
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Miscellaneous

Determine a Word of the Year

Lastly, this version of goal-setting is the most succinct. However, coming up with a word of the year does involve a deal of thought. My mother suggested this years ago, and I’ve enjoyed using this practice each year. I try to find a word that can encompass all parts of my life.

Hopefully these five ways to set your 2022 intentions will prove to be successful. I’d love to hear which version worked well for you. Please leave a comment to let me know!
